Grand Rapids Michigan is one of the best cities that blend both
commerce and culture. This wonderful city is the state of Michigan’s
second largest city and the last census revealed a population of almost
200,000 people. Native Americans settled into this area before the
Europeans arrived in the 19th century. European immigrants, many of
whom were Dutch, were mostly involved in the fur trade.
In 1850, Grand Rapids Michigan was formally recognized as a city. This
city became famous for its success in the lumber business and in the
manufacture of furniture. In fact, its nickname is still the furniture
city because furniture remains to be economically important as
automobile manufacture in this city.
This city has evolved into a modern, forward looking center. Grand Rapids Michigan has several colleges and universities and it has become a center for health research establishments.
This city’s airport was the first in the country to operate a scheduled passenger airline, with flights to Detroit.
The DeVos Place Convention Center can also be found in this city. The citizens Grand Rapids Michigan are traditionally Republican voters but have occasionally supported the Democrats. Gerald Ford once represented the state of Michigan and there is a museum in his name that houses the ex-President's library.
Sports is a major aspect of this city’s life. The Van Andel Arena is the home venue for the Griffins Ice Hockey team and for the Rampage Arena Football team. Fans can follow their team's fortunes on the several local radio stations in this city. The numerous radio stations that play jazz, rock and country music cater to just about every musical taste.
The cultural life of this city has also been cultivated. There is an annual arts festival with live shows and art exhibits in Grand Rapids Michigan. The Celebration on the Grand, which features more live entertainment and a fireworks display, is another cultural highlight. The City Museum boasts a large permanent art collection, while the Sculpture Park contains a botanical garden that provides entertainment for all the citizens and visitors of this city.
The history of the area is on display at the Public Museum of Grand Rapids. The people in this city love to go to the zoo and playgrounds of John Bull Park. There really is something for those who are into the arts, natural history, further education or sport in Grand Rapids Michigan.
